In 2005, CoachArt and its volunteers brightened the lives of 1,456 children by promoting self-esteem, normalcy and independence through hands-on learning. CoachArt matches volunteer coaches with students for a minimum of 10 lessons. All of the students in this program are on treatment or have recently completed the inpatient component of their medical treatment and have embarked on the long, outpatient therapeutic period. CoachArt lessons take place at qualified art studios, music centers, dance schools and athletic facilities in the neighborhoods where students live. Whether participating in a class or in an individual lesson, the children gain a sense of control they have lost in other areas of their life. Often, children with chronic illnesses miss school, fall back in grades, and lose touch with peers. These classes offer children the ability to socialize with people outside their families, learn new skills and develop a renewed level of confidence.
