History

"CoachArt is more than an organization, it is truly a way of life. I joined CoachArt in Jan 2004 and I can honestly say, it has changed my life for the better. I was initially drawn to CoachArt because of its mission statement and the opportunity to work with children. What I realized then and what continues to inspire me now is that the organization is so much more; it's a family with a foundation of strength, support and creativity to the children it serves. I have volunteered with various children-based organizations since high school and CoachArt continues to impress me daily with its ability to make each and every coach, Advisory Board member and most importantly, CoachArt child, feel special and important. In this day and age, it's so rare to find a group of individuals with one common goal: to bring true bliss, real joy to a child who is suffering from a life threatening illness. And, for me, there's nothing better than seeing a CoachArt child like sweet red-haired Zachary tell me at Celebrate Life that he's in remission and then jump into my arms with the biggest, most special smile. I feel so lucky to know Zachary and that personal and profound moment is what makes me proud to be part of the CoachArt family."

"We can all recall transformative experiences from a work of art. But, some of my most powerful moments in art have been in serving the community by engaging children in workshops of dance, theatre and painting. Recently, I spent three wonderfully fulfilling hours at Childrens Hospital LA painting flower pots with a group of kids whose courage and strength serves as an inspiration to us all. CoachArt asked me to work with a group of kids to give them a much-needed respite from their daily hospital therapy. Through our shared moments of creative inspiration, each stroke of paint visibly eased their mind, heart and body to nurture their strength and place them in a world free from the pain and pressure of their illness. Ultimately, these moments are never about any skill I can impart upon them. It is about the connection we forge, the bond that is built by showing that I cared enough to sit down and create art with them. The beautiful irony of it all was that, even though I "gave" my time, these children "paid" me with a reassuring sense of hope and faith in myself."

"CoachArt has been the most rewarding experience of my life. My work for the organization has consisted largely of putting together video presentations for mailings and major events. This has not only allowed me to have an intimate grasp of the mission of the organization, it has also immersed me in the personalities of everyone involved - from the tireless and generous visionaries who run the place, to the coaches and volunteers who define what it means to have heart, to the perpetually upbeat, remarkably talented, and relentlessly resilient children for whom CoachArt was created. Seeing these kids, learning their stories, and marveling at their strength are moments I will never forget. They not only impress upon me the greatness and determination of the human spirit, but they also serve as reminders that nothing in life should be taken for granted. CoachArt has taught me a tremendous lesson in perspective that I will carry with me forever. I will always be inspired to assist, advise, and support CoachArt in whatever ways I can - for it's goal is bold, noble, and magical: To make sure every child gets to experience childhood. In helping kids achieve this, it's easy to understand why it's an organization that gives its volunteers far more back than they could ever hope to put in."
